US Deputy Secretary of State visits Nigeria

The United States (US) Deputy Secretary, Kurt M. Campbell, is on a whirlwind tour of Nigeria the United Kingdom (UK) and France.

The tour will take place from April 29-May 3, and on his first trip on the African continent, Campbell is scheduled to co-chair the sixth US-Nigeria Binational Commission with Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar.

The two will discuss, according to a statement by the US Consulate in Nigeria, partnerships, security co-operation, shared prosperity, democracy, governance and accountability and the movement of people.

He will also meet with senior Nigerian government officials, business leaders, and civil society representatives. “My first trip to Africa as Deputy Secretary of State brings me full circle, I started my career as a PhD and stringer in southern Africa. I’m ready to advance US-Nigeria relations through the Binational Commission. Let’s seize this opportunity together,” Campbell said on social media platform X.

In London, he will participate in bilateral meetings on the Indo-Pacific and the Australia, UK and US trilateral security partnership.

He will also meet with UK counterparts to discuss continued support for Ukraine, as well as efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza in conjunction with the release of hostages and address the dire humanitarian situation.

In Paris, he will attend the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Ministerial Council Meeting, chaired by Japan.
